Welcome to Staten News, where the boxes get priced before anyone knows the pull rates and one ghost dragon owns a third of the competitive game.
Delta Reign booster boxes are preordering at $209.99 at Miniature Market. Out of stock, limit four per customer. The set doesn't hit shelves until Nov. 6.
MSRP is roughly $160, depending on whose listing you trust. That's a $50 premium for a product nobody has opened.
📦 Paying for Pulls You Haven't Seen
Run the math per pack. At $209.99, you're paying about $5.83 for each of the 36 packs. At MSRP it's closer to $4.50. That's roughly a 30% markup before a single pull rate is public.
What you're buying is Mega Rayquaza ex. Delta Reign is the English version of Japan's Storm Emeralda, which launched July 31, and Rayquaza is the mascot in both Special Illustration Rare and gold Mega Ultra Rare forms. The main set runs 103 cards, with the full list north of 135 once secret rares are counted.
Prereleases run Oct. 24 through Nov. 1. Pokémon TCG Live gets the set Nov. 5, and stores get it Nov. 6.
That's not a preorder. That's a bet on Rayquaza with a 30% vig.
📉 The Top of the Market Is Cooling
The CardTrack 100, which tracks the 100 most valuable raw Pokémon cards, is down 5.9% over the last 30 days. The broader Pokémon index is up 1.7% over the same stretch and flat on the week. Expensive cards are cooling. The rest of the hobby isn't.
Recent sets are where it shows. Per CardTrack's 30-day data:
Celebrations: Classic Collection: down 6.3%
Scarlet & Violet 151: down 6.0%
Prismatic Evolutions: down 5.4%
Pitch Black: down 5.2%
Meanwhile the old stuff is running. Majestic Dawn is up 34.0% and Plasma Storm is up 29.6% in 30 days. Diamond and Pearl Promos more than doubled.
Because when modern sets cool, collectors rotate into vintage where print runs are fixed and nobody is reprinting anything.
🛒 Weekend Buying Window
Sealed is where the discounts are. On TCGplayer, a Prismatic Evolutions Elite Trainer Box case is sitting at $1,366, down 26.7% in 30 days. A Journey Together booster box case is at $1,403, down 21.4%.
Those are the two cleanest dips on the board this weekend. Neither is a guaranteed bottom. Both are sets with real demand that got ahead of themselves and are now giving some of it back.
On the singles side, Mega Charizard X ex (Phantasmal Flames) is still trading at $1,440 on its most recent eBay sale, with 1,223 completed sales in the last 90 days. That's liquidity. Mega Gengar ex (Ascended Heroes) is the most traded card on eBay right now at 1,776 sales, last at $40.
🏆 Louisville: Can Anyone Beat the Dragon?
The Louisville Regional Championships run through Sunday at the Kentucky International Convention Center, with the main TCG event starting Saturday at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Dragapult ex walks in at 33.43% of the meta, per Limitless. Nothing else is close. N's Zoroark ex sits at 9.35%, Basic Box at 7.83%, and Slowking at 7.79%.
Dragapult didn't win Recife either, as we covered Wednesday. Being the most-played deck makes it the most-targeted deck. Every list in Louisville is being built to beat it.
For card buyers, the staples matter more than the winner. Boss's Orders shows up in 92% of competitive decks and Night Stretcher in 86%, across 3,653 recent decklists tracked by CardTrack.
📅 Calendar
Oct. 9 to 11: Louisville Regional Championships
Oct. 23: Deck Crafter's Collection
Oct. 24 to Nov. 1: Delta Reign prereleases
Oct. 30: 30th Celebration Battle Deck (Espeon ex and Umbreon ex)
Nov. 6: Delta Reign in stores
This is the month the market decides whether Rayquaza is worth paying for before the pull rates are public, or after.
