Welcome to Staten News, where inflation came in hot twice in two days and the safest place to hide turned out to be a $5 trillion phone company.
📉 Inflation Showed Up Twice
Wednesday's September CPI showed prices up 3.7% from a year ago. Economists wanted 3.6%. Core inflation came in at 2.6% against a 2.5% forecast, and the S&P 500 dropped 1% while the Nasdaq gave back 1.9%.
Thursday morning brought the real problem. Wholesale prices (PPI) jumped 1.3% in September alone, the biggest one-month gain since March 2022, and they're up 6.3% from a year ago.
Read that monthly number again.
Earlier Wednesday, New York Fed President John Williams said he saw one more rate hike as appropriate this year. Not a cut. A hike. Before the CPI print, CME FedWatch had roughly 78% of traders expecting a hold at the next meeting. The hot data pushed hike odds up from there.
🏦 Five Percent Is the Rent Now
The 10-year Treasury yield sat near 5.09% Thursday, and that counts as relief after the recent run to multi-year highs. The 30-year dropped about 10 basis points to 5.43%.
When a government bond pays 5% for doing nothing, every stock has to explain why it deserves your money instead. The ones priced on profits a decade out have the hardest time answering.
🔻 Chips Lost Seven Straight
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 0.88% Thursday, its seventh straight daily decline, after sinking more than 4% at one point in the session. Nvidia lost 1.84%. Dell dropped about 6.9% and HPE about 7.1%.
Taiwan Semiconductor posted a record quarter, with net income up 68.7% from a year ago to NT$763.06 billion. Its U.S. shares fell 1.8% to $422.25. Great numbers, red ticker. You've seen this movie.
Credit is where it gets uncomfortable. CoreWeave's default insurance hit a record this week, pricing better than 60% odds that the AI cloud company defaults within five years. Jensen Huang said CoreWeave needs no backstop from Nvidia. Stock buyers believed him. Bond buyers didn't.
🔄 Where the Money Went Instead
Thursday told the whole story. The Dow jumped 556 points, or 1.08%, to 52,177.69. The S&P 500 added 0.33% to 7,744.06, and the Nasdaq barely moved, up 0.08% to 26,713.03 after being down more than 1% earlier in the day.
Healthcare led the S&P sectors at +1.84%, followed by materials at +1.71% and financials at +1.38%. The Russell 2000 gained 1.38%. Lennar climbed more than 5% during the session as lower yields gave homebuilders some air, and Nike and Lululemon each rallied around 5%.
Apple crossed a $5 trillion market cap this week. During a tech selloff. Investors stopped treating it like a chip stock and started treating it like a bunker.
That's not a tech rally. That's a rotation wearing an Apple logo.
🏛️ The Banks Split the Room
Bank of America fell about 5% Wednesday after third-quarter profit dropped 17%, dragged down by a $1.2 billion regulatory penalty. BlackRock went the other way after beating estimates. Regions Financial, M&T Bank and Truist all report Friday morning, so the regional banks get the last word on the week.
🔮 What We're Watching Next
Because the Fed meets October 27-28, every data point between now and then gets read as a vote on a hike. That's 11 days of the market overreacting to everything.
Predicted gainer: Lennar (LEN). Homebuilders are the cleanest bet on yields easing, and Thursday showed how fast that trade moves when the 10-year backs off. The risk is just as obvious. One more hot inflation headline and the whole sector gives it back in an afternoon.
Predicted loser: Vertiv (VRT). Vertiv fell more than 6% Thursday as investors questioned AI data-center spending, and the CoreWeave credit story won't disappear over a weekend. When lenders start charging more to build AI capacity, the companies selling the cooling and power gear feel it next.
This is the week the market stopped asking when the Fed cuts and started asking whether it hikes.
