Clinicians can now pull notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation straight into a chat window. No more clicking through six tabs to find what a doctor wrote three years ago.
Why Epic said yes
Epic has spent two decades building the most defensible moat in health tech. Hospitals don’t switch EHR systems. Ever. So when Epic opens its system to an outside AI, that AI just inherited the moat.
This isn’t OpenAI disrupting healthcare software. This is OpenAI renting the healthcare software company’s trust.
The part nobody’s saying out loud
Every clinician query becomes training signal. Every chart pulled becomes context OpenAI now has infrastructure to touch. Google and Microsoft have circled healthcare AI for years with pilots that never scaled past a press release.
OpenAI just skipped the pilot phase.
Translation: while everyone else was asking hospitals for permission, OpenAI got the permission from the company hospitals already trust.
