Welcome to Staten News, where the pull rates are generous, the singles are paying for it, and the sealed product refuses to blink.
The 30th Celebration Classic Collection lost 32.7% of its value in seven days, per PokemonWizard. The anniversary victory lap is turning into a markdown rack.
📉 Last Week's Loser: 30th Celebration Classic Collection (-32.7%)
The Classic Collection reprints are the nostalgia layer of the 30th Celebration release, and they're bleeding. PokemonWizard has the priced list at $823.42 total, down 24.1% since the September 16 release.
The individual cards tell it better. Kotaku tracked prices on September 24. Here's where they sit now, per PokemonWizard:
Crystal Lugia (#149): $280 to $218.18
Charizard Base Set reprint (#4): $185 to $150.48
Magikarp (#203): $107 to $89.30
Gengar Prime (#94): $79 to $55.09
Gengar Prime gave back 30% in under two weeks. Lugia is still the most valuable card in the subset, and it's down $62.
These aren't bad cards. They're reprints of cards collectors already know by heart, and the emotional premium got priced in on day one. Now it's leaving.
📈 Last Week's Winner: The Shrink Wrap
Same set, opposite story. Here's English 30th Celebration sealed as of October 4, per Bill's Archive:
Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box: $59.99 MSRP, $308.89 market (5.2x)
Ultra-Premium Collection (Night): $179.99 MSRP, $722.03 market (4.0x)
Ultra-Premium Collection (Day): $179.99 MSRP, $565.59 market (3.1x)
Elite Trainer Box: $49.99 MSRP, $155.59 market (3.1x)
Booster Bundle: $26.94 MSRP, $72.11 market (2.7x)
Read that again. The cards inside keep getting cheaper, and the boxes they come in keep trading at three to five times retail.
It's less crazy than it sounds. There's no single-pack release in English, so sealed is the only way in. And the buyers paying 5x for a Pokémon Center ETB mostly aren't opening it. They're buying a 30th anniversary object that won't be printed again.
That's not a box of cards anymore. That's a collectible that happens to contain cards.
🎰 The Pull Rate Math
Special Illustration Rares in 30th Celebration hit at a 5.24% rate, better than one in 20 packs. Recent Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution sets ran closer to one in 80.
At the Booster Bundle's roughly $4.49 per pack, you're spending about $86 on average to land one SIR. The top SIR, Gengar ex, was $126 on September 24. By tenth place they're under $40.
The Futuristic Rares are worse. Mew and Mewtwo each land at close to 1%, so call it 100 packs, or about $449, per hit. PriceCharting has the Mewtwo ex Futuristic Rare at $55.05 raw. It opened around $1,000 on release day.
Generous pull rates killed the scalper trade on singles, which looks like exactly the point. The chase got easier, and the chase stopped paying.
🔮 Predicted Gainer: Mega Rayquaza ex Mega Ultra Rare (Storm Emeralda, Japanese)
Delta Reign prereleases start October 24, and the English set lands November 6. It's built on Japan's Storm Emeralda, with Mega Rayquaza ex as the headliner.
The Japanese Mega Ultra Rare opened around ¥300,000, roughly $1,830, the week of its July 31 release. PriceCharting has it at $543.81 raw now, with PSA 10 copies at $1,537.50. The estimated pull rate is roughly one per 50 to 100 boxes.
The thesis: English reveals and prerelease openings put Rayquaza back in every feed for the next month, and the Japanese original is the version long-term collectors chase. At about 70% off its launch price, there's room for that attention to turn into bids.
The risk is real. If English pull rates look anything like 30th Celebration, the whole Rayquaza market reprices lower. Upside? Possible. Guaranteed? Not even close.
🔮 Predicted Loser: Mewtwo ex Futuristic Rare (30th Celebration)
Roughly three ungraded copies sell every day on PriceCharting, with recent sales running from $35 to $70. Supply isn't slowing down. Every Booster Bundle and ETB cracked this week adds to it.
Japan's nine-set 30th Celebration Card Set wave hits October 16, which splits anniversary money two ways. A card that needs new buyers every single day is about to compete with a fresh Japanese product for the same wallets.
A PSA 10 still runs $377.73, so graders will keep pulling the best copies out of the raw pool. That helps the slab. It doesn't help the raw card.
📅 The Calendar
October 16: Japanese 30th Celebration Card Set wave
October 24: Delta Reign prereleases begin
November 6: Delta Reign (ME06) English release, 113 cards
This is the month the market decides whether 30th Celebration was a one-time gift to players or the new template for how Pokémon prints its sets. Delta Reign's pull rates will answer it.
This is not financial advice. Always do your own research before buying or selling collectibles.
