The Set Values Are Bleeding While the PSA 10 Premium on Trash Commons Went Up 500%
Raw prices keep sliding across every generation. Meanwhile a Cinccino common’s graded-10 premium climbed 522% since the bulk pause. The grading market and the raw market just split in two.
The raw card you can’t give away becomes a $448 card the second PSA stamps a 10 on it.
📉 The Raw Market Is Still Leaking
The generation-level story hasn’t changed, so I’ll keep it short. Per Collectrics data through August 2, the Mega Evolution block is down roughly 10% over 30 days, the worst on the board. Scarlet and Violet drifted down about 3.5%. The combined tracked market sits down around 3.5% for the month, sliding fresh lows into the first week of August.
That’s the exhale after a heavy release window, same as two weeks ago. Nothing new there.
Here’s what is new.
💎 The Grading Premium Went Vertical on the Junk
Look at the PSA 10 premium leaderboard, which tracks the dollar gap between a PSA 10 and a raw copy since the PSA bulk pause baseline in late May. The cards posting the biggest percentage jumps aren’t the chase cards. They’re the commons nobody thinks about.
Cinccino #153 saw its PSA 10 premium climb 522.7% since May 28. Venipede #132 is up 497.1%. Spidops ex #243 up 392.5%. Erika’s Vileplume ex #3 up 340.7%. Garbodor #141 up 309.6%. These are bulk-bin cards. The raw copies trade for a few dollars. The PSA 10 versions now carry premiums of $200 to $450 over raw, and that premium roughly quintupled in ten weeks.
Translation: the raw card is worthless and the graded 10 is a collectible, and the gap between those two states is where the entire money is now.
The dollar-change leaders tell the same story from the top. Seismitoad #105 added the most raw premium on the board, up $793 to a $2,275 gap. Volcarona #100 jumped 221.9%, adding $783. Even the blue chips moved: Umbreon ex #161 tacked on $765 to sit at a $4,889 premium, and Mew ex #232 added $353. When the premium expands across commons and chase cards at the same time, that’s not one card getting hot. That’s the grade itself repricing.
🎰 Why This Is Happening
The PSA bulk pause is the whole engine. When PSA throttled bulk submissions in late May, it slowed the supply of new PSA 10s hitting the market. Population growth stalled. And a graded card’s premium is a supply story before it’s a demand story. Fewer fresh 10s entering circulation means the existing 10s carry more scarcity, and the market prices that scarcity in.
That’s casino math working in reverse. Normally the printer floods the graded market and premiums compress. Pause the printer and every existing slab gets more valuable, especially on the low-population commons where a handful of new 10s used to move the whole market.
The average price paid per raw card backs it up. Per Collectrics data the 30-day average sat in the low $50s for most of July, then spiked to around $80 by August 1, the highest point on the chart. Buyers are paying up per card even as total set values fall. Fewer transactions, higher conviction on each one.
🃏 The Set EV Board, For the Rippers
Since we run live breaks, the pack math matters. Per Collectrics, the least-punishing sets to rip right now by average loss per pack: Perfect Order at -$4.23, then Pitch Black at -$5.66, Journey Together at -$6.00, and Chaos Rising at -$6.12. Every set loses money on average, which is the entire point of a break house. But those top the list for a reason.
On raw value locked in the pack, Crown Zenith leads at $10.58 per pack, then 151 at $9.19 and Black Bolt at $6.79. On total set value, Evolving Skies still towers over everything at $8,154 in raw hits, with Ascended Heroes second at $6,494.
📊 The Mispricing Board
The largest-residuals data, which flags cards trading furthest from their expected IQ baseline, is where the actual opportunities hide. Trading at a discount to baseline: Garchomp ex #245 (PAR) at 52.7% below, Archaludon ex #241 (SSP) at 45.1% below, Team Rocket’s Moltres ex #229 (DRI) at 30.7% below. Carrying a premium the model says is stretched: Arven’s Mabosstiff ex #235 at 46.2% over, Dragapult ex #165 (PRE) at 42.4% over, Tinkaton ex #262 (PAL) at 40.2% over.
The board reads the same way it always does. The market overpays for the popular chase card and underpays for the strong card nobody’s chasing this week.
📅 The Calendar Anchor
The 30th Anniversary set still headlines September 16, and Delta Reign lands November 6 with Mega Rayquaza ex. That matters for the grading story because both are high-volume releases. If the PSA pause is still throttling submissions when those sets flood the market, the 10-premium expansion you’re seeing on old commons could hit the new chase cards hard and fast.
Because that’s the real thread this week. The raw market is telling you one thing and the graded market is telling you the opposite, and the space between them just got a lot more expensive.
This is the week the grade stopped following the card and started leading it.
